David Harries

Director API & Chairman of the MAC

David is an extremely experienced professional interim executive, specialising in delivering maximum cashable value for the organisations for which he works in incredibly short time frames. He has considerable proven experience with companies across several industries in helping them successfully and quickly 'deliver change', as well as transforming performance of key business processes and revenue-generating operations.

David has over 32 years' experience in Business; 12 years FMCG, 10 years in Financial Services and 11 years as a Change Management and 'Performance Improvement' Interim Executive, operating in both the Caribbean, the United Kingdom and Europe. Positions held include; Sales Director for largest Caribbean conglomerate (Neal & Massy), General Manager and CEO of an SME FMCG company in the Caribbean, UK National Sales Training Manager for Prudential (responsible for 120 staff and an annual £20m budget), UK National Launch Manager of an £83m start-up venture (Egg - involving the sales training and motivation of over 5000 sales people), and UK Sales Director for a national sales and distribution publication company (responsible for a 150 full-time and 10000 part-time sales force).

David's interim achievements include the on-time, on-budget launch of Prudential Banking (now EGG), the start-up of Prudential's General Insurance Sales force in the UK, the turnaround and profitable sale of a £18m SME Company, re-designing the processes of a light manufacturing plant in the UK (saving over £5m), introducing comprehensive sales performance metrics for national lens manufacturing company (demonstrating a 30% improvement in performance), and the building from scratch of a 600 strong independent sales force in the UK.

An outspoken evangelist and lead strategist for the IMAI / API, a founder member of the IMAI and member of the management advisory committee, Richard is at front and centre of the Association's development and future.

Usually operating at board level from the micro through to SME's, Richard's 26 assignments have included, fund raising through IPO's, business strategy, strategic marketing, marketing management, UK and international c-level sales and business development, business planning, finance and accountancy. Success comes from applying more than 35 years business experience in UK and international strategic and operational business management and spread over the 20 years in interim. The requisite management disciplines needed for gap management, crisis management, financial and operational turnarounds, start-ups, and succession planning, are imparted with an approachable, pragmatic hands-on style combined with tenacious leadership. And it works.

Typically, Richard's fundamental process of discovery at the start of an assignment sets down the markers and frames the challenge. Within a few days the philosophy, attitudes, perhaps a misplaced mantra comprising a relentless drive to mechanise or 'transform' critical 'human' elements of the business, will be exposed. It's the 'software' leading the hardware and commonly it's flawed, over-complicated, circular and probably misses the point. Exposing hidden costs, changing attitudes, dissolving barriers to communication, encouraging debate and engaging staff in setting a new direction, sets the course.

In such a scenario, it whets the appetite of the interim but it's the desire to nail the task and make a lasting difference that generates the real hunger. It is akin to a killer instinct and it's why we do what we do. The API's strategy recognises the need to distinguish the practitioners from the rest and to set its own course to the client and to selected Providers.

Richard's website is well worth a visit!
