Managing Organisational Politics

An organisation’s decision to engage an interim manager is of itself a political act, and effect interims need to understand and manage organisational politics. Organisations are political arenas but we needn't be frightened of that fact. The reality of organisational politics is that it is about getting things done: about getting your views and ideas across, getting them listened to and getting them implemented. After all, we are paid to have ideas.

Organisational politics should be – and usually is – of positive benefit to the organisation rather than a negative influence. This course examines the Machiavellian myths of the ‘knife in the back’ and of ‘shady deals’, and sets about developing interpersonal skills that will help you and your client organisation achieve your aims and objectives.

Course content

This online continuing professional development course examines the way that effectively managing organisational politics can offer business benefits by ‘getting things done’ and ‘making things happen’. Understanding why people do the things that they do and behave as they do makes good business sense.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • recognise the importance of political skills in organisations
  • identify and analyse political behaviour in your client organisation
  • manage relationships with colleagues and other stakeholders within the political context of your organisation
  • develop and enhance a range of political skills in the workplace
  • influence decision making more effectively.

In this course there are activities that you can use to help you relate your learning to your client organisation and your role within it. These should help you to assemble the basic understanding necessary for the final part of the work-based activity (WBA), which is to produce a Personal Development Plan that will help you to maximise your personal contributions in the workplace.
